Candle Health & Safety Tips
The SM5 experience is one of both beauty and fragrance. In order to gain the full potential of your candle, follow the below guidelines in order to properly care for them.
1. Safety first
Never burn your beautiful SM5 Candle out of sight or for more than three hours (for Tree & Wanderer Tins, this will be a max of two hours). Always keep it on a heat proof, flat surface away from children, pets, drafts and anything that could pose a potential threat/fire hazard.
When handling your SM5 Candle after enjoying its beauty and fragrance, the vessel will (potentially) be hot - along with the melted wax inside. Handle with extreme care.
Never leave a SM5 Candle burning when you leave a room, or when going to sleep/feeling sleepy.
Your safety and that of the candle is paramount.
2. Lighting up; The first burn
On the first use, burn your SM5 Candle until the entire surface has turned to liquid wax, creating a full melt pool. Typically, between 1-2 hours depending on the size of the vessel. Larger vessels may take longer. This initial burn prevents tunnelling and sets the candles memory and the foundation for how the rest of the candle will burn.
Remember, time is important when enjoying your SM5 Candle, for both you and the candle. If you burn your SM5 Candle for short periods of time, you will not gain the full potential of the candle, the fragrance or the overall crafts(wo)man-ship.
3. Snip your wick
No matter your wick, (wooden or cotton), it will need trimming before each burn. Trim the wick 1/4 to 1/8 of an inch to ensure the flame is at the right height for the candle, so it maintains a clean, even and consistent burn - untrimmed wicks can cause over-burning, black smoke and even discolouration.
Remove any wick debris from your SM5 Candle prior to burning to aid in its overall health and prevent a potential hazard.
4. There is such a thing as an 'ugly' Candle, its called 100% Soy
Once your SM5 Candle has cooled, it may look 'ugly'; bumpy, cracked or even show some discolouring. Do not fear, this simply means that it is a pure Soy made candle.
Sadly, bigger/other brands tend to use Paraffin (which is not good for you, or your home) within their wax mix, so the candles tend to remain looking perfectly smooth, no matter what. Remember, perfection is not always best after all.
5. When is enough, enough?
We never want the beauty of your SM5 Candle to end, however when 1/2 inch of the wax remains, it is time to upcycle or discard any (cooled) additional wax, the remaining wick and to recycle/up-cycle your vessel.
Repurposing the remaining wax is easy and it means your SM5 experience will continue with no wax wasted.
- Fill the vessel 2 - 3" from the top with very hot/boiling water and leave it to cool on a heat proof surface. The wax will, over time float to the top, where, once it has cooled, you will be able to remove it and use as a wax melt and continue enjoying your chosen SM5 fragrance.
